Jamie Dufault and Bonnie Griffin in "A Lie of the Mind"

“A Lie of the Mind” is one of Sam Shepard’s “in your face” plays about the complexities of human relationships, especially those within families. But do not shy away from the material. In fact, this play demonstrates that there is a way out – a chance for a new beginning, if we can make the right choices and avoid repeating the past.

Don’t wait until the last weekend, get your tickets for “A Lie of the Mind” and go as soon as you can. Get away from the daily trauma of the news and worry about the weather. Let your brain breathe, help it stave off dementia. Get out and go see an invigorating play. “A Lie of the Mind” is such a play, currently showing at Perishable Theater in Providence through September 11th. Shows are Thursday through Sunday at 7:30pm with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 (except for Sept. 4). This brilliant and challenging play is brought to life by Rumble; a local group of like-minded theater artists who tackle complex works with a passion.

Director Jimmy Calitri was looking for something challenging and he certainly found it in Sam Shepard’s “A Lie of the Mind”. It is an intense, thought provoking experience that will “fill you up”. The young wife, Beth (Bonnie Griffin), victim of her husband’s violence, speaks this phrase within a poignant moment in the play. Director Calitri bravely dove into this complex vortex and came out with an intelligent and well-staged rendition.

Second Wave of One-Acts Lands in Cranston

Alex Rotella, Julian Trilling, Geoff White in "Man Woman Man"

The second “wave” of one-act plays began on Friday, August 19 at the Artists’ Exchange in Cranston, RI. We were invited back to preview this additional set of plays selected for production from the many entries. Despite the concern that the best had been presented in the first “wave”, this second set of plays was just as satisfying, if not more so, than the first.

Black Box Artistic Director, Rich Morra, directed all of these entries. One of the reasons the Artists’ Exchange is among my favorite theater stops, is the interesting mix of community, student, and developmental needs clients utilized by Morra in their unique theater program. It is likely the old teacher in me that delights in seeing the growth of the actors who perform at the Black Box.

One such young actor is Alex Rotella. Over the past few years I have watched Rotella perform in a variety of productions in the Black Box Theater. It was a great feeling to see him now in more mature and diverse roles. Rotella was the eerie butcher in the first wave of one-acts in Kevin Broccoli’s “A Winter Place”.  In this wave he plays an erudite man, serious about the value of art.  “My Name is Art” by Peter Snoad provides a clever ending to the eternal debate about “what is art?” Allison St. Rock and Christopher Ferreira challenge the perceptions of Rotella’s character.

Black Box Presents One Act Play Fest With Great Gusto

Joanne Fayan's & Jim Sullivan - "Clown Therapy"

Joanne Fayan's & Jim Sullivan - "Clown Therapy"

Not only is August the 6th Annual One Act Play Fest at the Artists’ Exchange in Cranston, RI; it also is the 7th anniversary of the founding of this unique program at the Black Box, combining theater arts and human resources in a community setting.

For this One Act Fest, the key words are opportunity and excellence. This program presents opportunities for both new and experienced playwrights, new and experienced actors, plus those in the Gateways programs, opportunities for students and interns to learn about theater, and an opportunity for the public to view new and exciting talent right here in Rhode Island.

The real star attraction in the One Act Fest is the writing. Each one-act is written cleverly, with care and intent, and had not only “face-value” entertainment, but also a bit of advice about life and what is important. Several plays would have been hard to understand without the clear direction of Rich Morra.

I was impressed with the variety of genres chosen out of the nearly 200 one-acts submitted from throughout the country and Canada for consideration. The evening began with a creepy ghost story, titled “A Winter Place”, from Kevin Broccoli. Actors Alex Rotella and Erin Archer take us from a reality to an unreality, raising goose-bumps along the way.
