Lily and Sam are expecting their first child, and neither one feels ready: Sam worries about what this means for their bank account, while Lily’s troubled relationship with her autistic sister, Sarah, causes her to question their parenting abilities. When a fire at Sarah’s apartment ruins her 30th birthday and brings her into their home, Lily, 28, and Sam, 26, are forced to confront the very real possibility that their child might be autistic. Splitting its focus between the challenges of parenting a child on the spectrum and Generation Y’s complicated love affair with selfishness, Scared of Sarah investigates the fear that sets in when two people make a third. Presented by Sidecar Theater Company. Directed by Rich Morra.

My puppet Jerry asked me to say Happy Valentine’s Day to you! Join us on 2/11/12 for comedy in Sudbury at 100 Landham Road. Call/text Jerry or me anytime on our iPhones: 617-901-6232

Jerry has been dating a new girl for the past few months, but he doesn’t really love her. Finding a Valentine’s Day card that does NOT say LOVE is his issue. Last Wednesday at the Amazing Things Arts Center I played piano with my left hand while Jerry sang a song for her. Jerry changed the lyrics to “I Love You Truly”.. but his new lyrics were NOT appropriate (but okay for the televised public rebroadcast).

Cost: $14 adv, $20 door
Category: Music

Long Time Courting celebrates the release of their debut album, Alternate Routes! Long Time Courting’s first studio recording sparkles with creativity and fresh energy. Drawing from the deep well of traditional music, the all-women quartet finds new and satisfying ways of making jigs, reels, and old ballads accessible to the modern folk audience. Though the majority of the material on the album is Irish in origin, the album also features material from Sweden, England, and America, as well as a handful of originals.
Bringing together the talents of Sarah Blair on fiddle/vocals, Liz Simmons on guitar/vocals, Shannon Heaton on flute/vocals, and Ariel Friedman on cello/vocals, this Boston-based band shares a love of traditional Irish, Scottish and American folk music as well as contemporary material. They bring elements of these various genres to their repertoire in a way that is seamlessly innovative, inventively arranged, and skillfully rendered.
“An exceptionally good album… one of the best new groups playing in the Celtic genre.”
- Times Argus
“This is not a ‘girl band’ for the sake of being so. These women are true masters of their craft.”
- Aoife O’Donovan, vocalist and songwriter, Crooked Still
“(Alternate Routes) is a tapestry, with bright threads of voice and instrument weaving in and out, coming to the fore and supporting in the background through a series of musical conversations…”

Portraits in Miniature
@Loring-Greenough House
12 South Street
Jamaica Plain, MA

01/22/2012 @ 3:00 pm
Cost: $15 ($10 students & seniors)
Category: Music
Contact: lghhouseconcerts@aim.com

Trium, literally “of three,” is a trio of superb sopranos who have dedicated themselves to the exploration and performance of music of three equal voices. On January 22, 2012, they will present Portraits in Miniature. In the tradition of the Renaissance miniature portrait, a tiny detailed devotion to a beloved subject, Trium will explore, luxuriate and celebrate bite-size portions of a variety of periods and styles, from the Notre Dame school in medieval Paris to the sixteenth century Flemish motet, to the English Madrigal style, with a soupcon of turn of the century and contemporary. The concert will take place at the historic Loring-Greenough House, 12 South Street, Jamaica Plain MA, as part of the Sunday Afternoon at the ‘Greenough House parlor concert series.

Meet Trium at afternoon tea following the program.

The Sunday Afternoon at the ‘Greenough House series recreates the atmosphere of 18th and 19th century “musical afternoons” in the 1760 Loring-Greenough House, twice monthly, October to May. Tickets are available at the door: donation $15 ($10 seniors, students and JPTC members). Space is limited; reservations are suggested-call 617-524-3158 or email lghouseconcerts@aim.com.

Trium was founded in 1997 to perform a benefit concert at Emmanuel Church in Boston, but Shannon Larkin, Margaret Johnson, and Susan Trout are well known individually for their work with Handel & Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, and Emmanuel Music. Each of the voices has a distinctly unique quality, and when they come together they make a gloriously blended sound that is even greater than the sum of its parts. Margaret’s pure sweet tone and stratospheric range surround each piece with a halo of brilliance. Shannon’s clarion soprano weaves in with a shimmer and dips down into mezzo warmth. Susan’s brilliantly radiant and richly warm tone adds depth and beauty before carrying its strength to the top of the staff. Whether they are singing a finely tuned dissonant chord in a Renaissance motet or an exquisitely blended unison in a contemporary art song, Trium makes music “of three” sound like so much more.

Movie trailer can be viewed at: http://www.imdb.com/video/wab/vi2967444761/

Background for “Precious Knowledge”

Precious Knowledge interweaves the transformative stories of seniors in the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School. Inequalities in education continue to affect people of color. The ticking time bomb story of our time is that fewer than six in 10 Latino adults in the United States have a high school diploma. These alarming dropout rates will continue to have a serious impact on our nation. This documentary goes further, however, by illustrating forms of critical pedagogy that can empower Latino youth and other youth of color and change this state of affairs. Precious Knowledge illustrates that a Mexican American Studies program inspires 82% of its students to enroll in college. The themes of Precious Knowledge are embedded in the journey of each student as they: self reflect, seek out precious knowledge, begin to act, and ultimately transform, while nurturing positive images of Latino identity and embracing the dignity of all cultures and histories.
