I was born and raised in San Diego and received a BFA (Painting, Black & White Photography, and Black & White Lithography) from San Diego State University. After MFA courses at UC-Santa Barbara and working as a graphic designer, I returned to SDSU for my secondary teaching credential in Art and ESL. I live in the Boston area, recently completed my Masters in Teaching in Creative Arts at Bridgewater State College, and am currently exhibiting my work in Boston and Providence.
Artist’s Statement
My art begins in a specific, physical space which has left a lasting impression on me. In exploring the landscape, I develop a connection to place. The unfamiliar slowly becomes known to me through my experience in a particular place and through the process of art making that follows.
I construct my art from both old and new fragments. In my collage, I collect and then intuitively combine original photographs, found images and objects to form a psychological landscape. I cut up, recycle and move pieces around; I add, subtract, and leave traces behind. I enjoy working in a series to find the formal connections and personal symbols which emerge as the work develops. Themes in my work include: sense of place, protecting the environment, travel, memory, loss, transformation, impermanence, and home.
