Kalliope Amorphous was born in Providence, RI, and spent the bulk of her youth in New York City, dabbling in everything from spoken word poetry to performance art. Her poetry and prose have been published in various magazines and literary journals. She now focuses exclusively on the self-portrait photograph as a catalyst for exploring ideas of identity, gender, archetype and myth.
Kalliope's previous incarnations in theater and performance art can be seen in her theatrical approach to lighting and costuming, as well as her character inspired images. Her work ranges from interpretations of pre-existing iconography to compositions meant purely to provoke and challenge perceptions and first impressions. Through playing roles of both subject and photographer, her art seeks to blur the lines between self and other, reality and imagination.
Self-taught in photography, Kalliope takes an intuitive approach to composition and lighting and works without the aid of professional lighting or studio equipment. Makeup, costuming, photography, modeling and post processing are all self-created. Her images convey a sense of both the familiar and bizarre, and range from classic to camp aesthetics.
“My influences and the things that inspire are me are all over the map, which accounts for such a wide range of concepts in my art. I am drawn to everything from the bizarre and disturbing to the romantic and beautiful to images that are just completely over the top and bordering on kitsch. This might make my work difficult to fit into a particular niche, but I find it impossible to attach myself to one particular aesthetic. “
Kalliope currently lives in Providence, RI and is prone to lamenting that she left her heart in San Francisco. She has compiled a large body of work and it is only recently that she has begun to put it out for public view. In the past year, she has shown her work throughout the US and internationally.
