Barry
Shuchter was born in Newark, NJ in 1956. Today,
he resides in Massachusetts. In the interim,
he has produced hundreds of paintings and
thousands of drawings. He has worked at dozens
of jobs, ranging from baking bread in a factory,
to operating a drying machine in a woolen
mill, to smelting lead, to washing dishes,
to working with computers. He has consumed
hundreds of pizzas. As Shuchter says, "Every
act of creation involves an act of digestion."
Shuchter's paintings often depict moments
of his experience that would otherwise be
invisible: an identity conflict regarding
poverty and wealth… what wind looks
like blowing through the branches of a tree…
the meditation of washing dishes… the
mutual influence of adjoining plants…
deciding whether to stay inside and write
or follow the path outdoors… the effect
of an over-hanging branch on the river below.
Whether the
subject is a living being or an inanimate
object, Shuchter's paintings are stylized
expressions of the play between his inner
and outer realities.
